The remodel connects the inside and outside. A new interior north-south circulation path coupled with more exterior doors, balconies and decks allow for direct access outside and easier movement from the entry courtyard to the backyard. All exterior windows were replaced, repositioned and organized into cohesive modular units creating either panoramic corner windows or framed views centered on walls. The problem of finding the front door was solved through material choices, facade composition and a new landscape design which fully integrates the home into its setting. Different scales and finishes of exterior siding define the small box of the entry and the big box of the home. The remodel of the interior transformed a dark cluster of rooms into a modern light filled open space. The staggered pattern (rigid but loose) reflect an east meets west attitude acknowledging the client's years spent in Japan as expressed though colors and materials.
