Reflect House
Reflect House
Reflect House is part of a new generation of compact houses that are densifying communities throughout California. Passing of legislation legalizing the construction of accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on standard suburban lots has spurred homeowners to rethink their living arrangements. The owner of a large Victorian home in Berkeley California elected to replace a small utility shed in his backyard with an ADU. Reflect House takes its design cues from the shed that preceded it and the Victorian home it sits behind but shifts and changes these design precedents. The basic shed profile was maintained in the new ADU but was then extruded and wrapped into a U shape plan to create a central courtyard. The courtyard is lined with glass to reflect and bounce light into the rooms. The exterior of the Reflect House is clad in oversized shingles that distend and distort the wood shingle found on the Victorian home. The polychrome exterior of the Victorian is reinterpreted in cement board panels, Cor-ten steel, and vertical living plant walls. The main living space runs parallel to and looks back towards the Victorian home. The bedroom wings on either side gain privacy from the main house by being placed perpendicular to the main living space.
